Meet the signees: Mark Ingram

NAME: Mark Ingram
POSITION: Running back
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5-10, 190
HOMETOWN/SCHOOL: Flint, Mich./Southwestern Academy
SENIOR YEAR STATS: Rushed for 1,700 yards and 24 touchdowns.

LIKELIHOOD TO START IN 2008 (SCALE OF 1 TO 10): 3
LIKELIHOOD TO PLAY IN 2008 (SCALE OF 1 TO 10): 7

THE SKINNY
Alabama has plenty of options at running back, with four experienced players — Glen Coffee, Terry Grant, Jonathan Lowe and Roy Upchurch — returning, in addition to promising redshirt freshmen Demetrius Goode and Jeramie Griffin. What the Crimson Tide doesn't have is a back who possesses both game-breaking skill and the ability to make it through an entire season healthy. Ingram could be that player, though he'd likely serve in some sort of two-man rotation if he wins a spot as a true freshman. Alabama coach Nick Saban has always used more than one back, and there's no reason to expect different this season.

ESPN SCOUTS INC. EVALUATION

This kid is a lot like Martin Ward another fine back in the 2008 class. Ingram hits the hole hard and rarely dances behind the line of scrimmage. He has great speed and burst, and he's built well enough to handle the punishment between the tackles. He has the burst to get to the corner and the acceleration to win the footrace down the sidelines. He has adequate vision and shows the ability to change directions without losing much in transition. Is elusive in the open field and is a huge threat if he breaks through to the second level. Shows outstanding decisiveness as a runner — picks and slides through tiny crease and explodes into daylight. Runs with good leg drive and pad level and the more you watch him, you realize he has more power than one might think. Breaks arm tackles and consitnely falls forward and gains yards after contact
