| Position analysis: Defensive line Wallace Gilberry was able to carry a fairly mediocre group last season, totaling 10 sacks and 27 tackles for loss as a senior. But Gilberry’s now gone, leaving plenty of bodies but no proven standouts on the Tide’s D-line. Projected starters Bobby Greenwood (6-5, 267, senior) Lorenzo Washington (6-4, 283, junior) Brandon Deaderick (6-4, 286, junior) Greenwood was on his way to a solid 2007 season, but never really recovered after an ankle injury suffered against Florida State. He’s being counted on to assume Gilberry’s role as strong-side run-stuffer this year. Washington had a quietly effective first year as a starter, but lacks the bulk Nick Saban likes in his defensive tackles. He might be better suited for end. Deaderick probably has the best pass-rush skills of the three, and can also slide inside and play tackle in certain situations. He’s the most likely candidate of this group to break out this year.
