| Position analysis: Running backs Alabama will open fall camp with at least seven, and perhaps eight or nine running backs on scholarship. But six weeks from the beginning of practice, the Crimson Tide doesn’t seem to have what you would call an established No. 1 ball carrier. Projected starter Glen Coffee (6-2, 197, junior) Coffee was the Tide’s most complete running back when he was in the lineup last year, which wasn’t often enough. He missed four games due to a suspension in the textbook controversy and was also sidelined at various times by a series of nagging injuries. Getting hurt has been a problem for Coffee, who missed the entire 2006 season with a knee injury and all of the spring after shoulder surgery. But when he’s right, Coffee has an excellent combination of speed, power and pass-receiving skills. Whether he’s got enough of those attributes to be an SEC-caliber running back for an entire season remains to be seen. In reserve Full Story
