Football signee Melvin Ray has opted to play professional baseball rather than attend the University of Alabama this year. Melvin Ray Sr. informed Alabama coach Nick Saban of his son's decision this afternoon.
"He tossed and turned with it over the weekend," said Ray's father, "and he's decided that he wants to go ahead and give it a shot. So we're going to support him behind that."
Ray, a receiver from Tallahassee, Fla., was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 33rd round of last week's Major League Baseball first-year player draft. Ray was a standout outfielder in high school. His father and brother each were drafted by major league teams.
