| Jones, Tide signees on track for T-town TUSCALOOSA - All eight of Alabama's football signees from the Mobile area expect to qualify academically for this season, according to their respective high school coaches. That includes Foley receiver Julio Jones, the most touted member of a Crimson Tide recruiting class rated by most analysts as the best in the nation. According to Foley coach Todd Watson, Jones will qualify with an ACT score of 20 and passing marks in 17 core classes when only 16 were required. "Julio was fine all along," Watson said. The transcripts of every college signee must be reviewed and approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse before eligibility is officially confirmed. Seven of the eight prospects plan to enroll at UA in time for the first summer semester, which begins June 3. The exception is St. Paul's receiver Destin Hood, who is leaning toward a professional baseball career rather than attending Alabama, according to his father, Dewayne Hood. Hood, a standout shortstop, is projected as an early selection in the June 5-6 first-year player draft for Major League Baseball. Hood's prep football teammates Mark Barron and Ivan Matchett have graduated and are "both ready to go," said St. Paul's coach Mike Bates. "I can't imagine anything that would happen that would keep them from enrolling," Bates said. Barron passed with flying colors, scoring a 26 on his ACT, Bates said. Full Story The biggest concerns left among the signees appear to be Alonzo Lawrence and Kerry Murphy. Lawrence is having his ACT score verified, but that should not hold him up. Murphy apparently still has issues from Hargrave Military Institute.
