| McClain accident revealing in many ways It could have been bad news for everyone, except for beginner’s luck. That, as much as anything, is what kept Alabama sophomore linebacker Rolando McClain from being injured when, on his first day with his new motorcycle, he skidded under another vehicle. McClain came away with scrapes and bruises, but no broken bones. Keeping priorities straight here, let’s say first that it is great news for the McClain family, just another of the narrow scrapes that happen with teenagers. Second, it is also good news for the Alabama football team. It is possible for off-season events to have big in-season ramifications, and it is hard to think of any occurrence that would impact the Crimson Tide defense more significantly than an event that limited McClain’s availability. Heading into the summer, there is no area on the team more lacking in experience than linebacker. Head coach Nick Saban is already dealing with enough issues at the position to fill a soap opera script. There has been no official word on the status of Prince Hall, seeking to work his way back into Saban’s good graces and the playing rotation, but scuttlebutt is that, even if he is reinstated, that won’t mean he’ll immediately get back on the field. Ezekial Knight has been plagued by recurrent concussion problems and the chances he will play for Alabama in 2008 are much less than the chances he won’t. The Jimmy Johns experiment remains just that — an experiment. Despite his sophomore status, McClain has been a constant — an all-star level performer, tough enough to play through injuries last season and smart enough to call the defenses, tough duty for a freshman while he was learning on the job.
