Nick Saban eyes new way to recruit

Nothing gets people talking around the SEC - from football coaches to football fans - like Nick Saban and recruiting.
How many other coaches have reeled in the top signing class in the nation and had their name attached to a recruiting rule in short order?
The so-called Saban Rule prohibits head coaches from visiting high schools during the current evaluation period, which started April 15 and ends May 31. It hasn't prevented Saban from showing his face on a high school campus without setting foot on that campus.
Diabolical.
And, according to the NCAA, completely legal.
Like a lot of college coaches - including those from Auburn, Michigan, Oklahoma and Notre Dame - Saban is recruiting Athens High School defensive end William Ming. But Saban found a creative way to make contact the other day.
Alabama assistant coach Curt Cignetti visited Athens High, which has a Distance Learning Lab that allows Athens students to take online classes by using a live webcam.
Cignetti left behind a web address that Ming used to log on later that day and spend 15-20 minutes talking, through the webcam, with Saban, who was in his office in Tuscaloosa.
Athens High Coach Allen Creasy, who witnessed the conversation, called it "a first from a recruiting standpoint" for his school

There is more than one way to bend the rules - I am really starting to dislike Saban more with each passing day.

Good coaches can get good players without tap dancing on the rule book.

Please, JRL your just mad that your Coach didn't come up with this first and Saban is not breaking any rules it is the same as a phone call and that is allowed. Recuirts are allowed a certian number of calls by NCAA rules from Coaches. I like the fact that Saban thinks outside the box but within the Rules allowed. He can't help it if he is smarter than the other SEC coaches who are just plain lazy. This rule came about because other coaches hated being out hustled by Saban, there are reasons why they call Saban a great recruiter he just keeps adapting to the rules and not getting boxed in thats all.

Yeah that's it - he is smarter While Saban is being creative Richt and Tubbyville are visiting the troops in the Middle East. After that Richt will take his family and possibly some of his players on a mission to some third world country. I prefer the coach we have over the coach you have Guess Richt is just a lazy second rate coach. Yeah that's it - he is just lazy

Well thats great that Richt is doing a good thing by visiting troops. And I did not say that he was a second rate coach or that Richt is lazy far from it I like Mark Richt think that he is a pretty darn good football coach and recruiter. Saban is like alot of people who throw themselves in what they do. You can't fault a man who likes to do his job and do it well. It is a stupid rule there are some coaches that hate to have to work harder in recruiting they want to have time to do other things pretty sure Saban likes to take time off as well as anyone else but also He has a job to do and he will do it as the rules allow. He is not bending any rules as you said, he is using the rules to the fullist. The NCAA states that Video conferencing is considered as a phone call and is not a violation of any rule. I would also like to Know what has Saban done to make you dislike him more? An one other thing all coaches have to dance with the rules that they are given to play by.

I didn’t mean to infer you thought Richt was lazy but I did see a generalization that Saban was the recruiting guru and the others were simply lazy. I think all coaches have a style that they adjust and develop over time. Some are successful and some aren’t.

I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is that I find distasteful about Saban but he does grate on the few nerves I have left and Urban Meyer occupies a seat next to him. I get the feeling winning comes first – cost be damned.

Winning is very important and I'm sure Richt would be run out of town if he didn't win but winning is not the only thing and the methods employed to produce a winner are equally important. Most if not all UGA fans have embraced Richt - he is a winner on the field and off.

Richt will continue to recruit talented players but I doubt he will ever compromise the program or his ethics to bag a stud player - it is simply not worth it.

Well I think that Saban is the same way. Doing things the right way on and off the field to create better Men, Students and Football Players He has already shown that it doesn't matter how good a player one is if you don't do it off the field you won't get to play on the field, (ie Jimmy Johns, Prince Hall and a few others) it is more than football it is shaping young mens lives for the future. And Hope that one can win a championship or two on the way.

Re: Nick Saban eyes new way to recruit

JRL Saban irritates you because he does not quit. The man is relentless and a tireless worker who loves his job. Saban has a knack for getting under the skin of other coaches and other teams fans because he will not rest until he achieves his goals. Saban studies the rules and works within the framework tweaking it to the maximum. Call him a workaholic call him driven or insane but one thing you can call him is Coach of The Crimson Tide! Keep on Rolling NICK!

No my friend it has nothing to do with quiting or not quiting or studying the rules or being smarter or being a workaholic or any other flowery lable you want to attach - he is a jerk - and you are welcome to keep him.

By the way did Toledo fire him or did he quit - did Mich. St. fire him or did he quit - Did LSU fire him or did he quit - Did Miami fire him or did he quit ? One of us doesn't know the definition of quit

Do you think Mark Richt would stay with Georgia if the Dallas Cowboys or New England Patriots came calling?

Mark Richt will never leave UGA, on his own, for another coaching position. If you do a little research you can see why I say that. In a nutshell he was offered other jobs when he was at Fla. St. and turned them down because the job / city / school didn't feel right. When UGA called he brought his family to Athens and asked them - "Do you want to live here for the rest of your life?" His approach was I'm taking a job for life - not as a stepping stone for more money. His entire family has moved to Athens - including most of his extened family. Richt leaving on his own for another coaching poisiton - it won't happen - ever. Mark Richt is cut from a different mold - to coin your past comments - he is a throwback to a different era - he is not in coaching for the money.

Re: Nick Saban eyes new way to recruit

Saban is good at recruiting but his weak point is he got no WORD. You cant trust him as far as you can throw him. If something better comes along, which it will, he will leave as quick as he came. Thats a proven fact.
