| Jury out on Saban until April On Jan. 4, 2007, Nick Saban was introduced as Alabama's head football coach and one could almost feel the earth move under his feet. The week was surreal in almost every way imaginable. I was one of the many caught up in the mania. "I've seen a lot of things in my quarter-century of covering Alabama and Auburn football," I wrote in this space one year ago today. "But other than the 1992 national championship, I don't think I've ever seen anything, at least in the sense of uniting the Alabama nation, to compare to this." A year later, has Saban lived up to expectations? Are Alabama fans as unified and confident of regaining lost glory as was the case back then? Or have tired clichés been inserted for booming confidence about where the program currently is and where it is going? Obviously, the record isn't a whole lot better than it was a year ago. But that really wasn't what this year was supposed to be about, now was it? More than anything, what Saban needed to do was build a foundation for big dividends three and four years down the road. Has he done that? And what about momentum going into 2008? Full Story
