TUSCALOOSA – Classes begin anew for the spring semester on Wednesday at the University of Alabama, and among the thousands of students returning to class will be the Crimson Tide’s basketball players.
Mark Gottfried’s team is returning to school with what is believed to be the best-ever team GPA the basketball program has had. The 15 players on the 2007-08 squad had a 3.12 team GPA on a 4.0 scale. Perfect in every class with all “A’s” was sophomore starting forward Demetrius Jemison, a marketing major who says it was his first 4.0 since his junior year in high school at Birmingham’s Huffman High School.
“Our guys have always done well but we this past semester they did an extremely good job,” said Alabama head basketball coach Mark Gottfried who was an Academic All-Southeastern Conference player during his playing career at Alabama. “They worked very hard academically. It’s something we emphasize but you’ve got to give the credit to the young guys. They did a good job. That’s one thing I like about this team. We’ve got guys who take care of business on the floor and they do it academically as well. That’s been great to see.”
