AUBURN | On a cold and gray Saturday, a healthy contingent of University of Alabama football fans made the 200-mile journey to Auburn to cheer on their struggling Crimson Tide and to hope, despite the odds, to end a five-game losing streak to the cross-state rivals.
They left chilled and disappointed.
As the trombone section began warming up just after 5 p.m. outside Cary Hall in the shadow of Jordan-Hare Stadium, the slow, familiar strains of 'Yea, Alabama!' drew fans of all colors.
Soon, the din that rose from the cries of 'Roll Tide!' and 'War Eagle!' made the cheers indistinguishable from one another.
But some wearing orange and blue were not content with screaming and took to gesturing toward the band members variations on the one-fingered salute.
And at least one fan dropped his pants and bent over with his backside facing the trombonists as they played.
