| "Pattern in personality" must change in Tide TUSCALOOSA | Some games are lost because of problems in personnel. The University of Alabama has had a couple of those losses this season. But that doesn’t explain Mississippi State, and it sure doesn’t explain Louisiana-Monroe. Some games are lost because of poor play-calling, which encompasses all the aspects of a game which coaches can control: who is in the game, what plays those choose to run, how they approach a certain situation. There were issues like that on Saturday — there are in all losses — but that doesn’t explain Louisiana-Monroe. So Nick Saban was asked on Saturday how he does explain Louisiana-Monroe — not just losing to the Warhawks, but how a season that seemed so promising a month ago may now be defined by that loss. The explanation seemed perfectly valid. Saban certainly didn’t seem to be shirking responsibility or side-stepping questions. He apologized, more than once, for the way the football team “represented this great institution.” But the other explanation was sobering. It was not a problem with personnel, or poor play-calling. It was, to use Saban’s alliterative phrase, “a pattern in personality.” “I have my ideas,” he said when asked why this team couldn’t seem to “finish.” “The season is long. What we do demands a lot of commitment and perseverance. You have to challenge yourself. You have to keep pushing yourself. It’s about not taking the easy way. Full Story
