| Stellar starting lineup, or does Tide lack depth? ![]() Thursday, October 04, 2007 TUSCALOOSA -- Competition is king. That's the way University of Alabama coach Nick Saban sees it. A few good practices can cause a player to rocket up the depth chart. A few poor practices can do the opposite. At least, that's the idea. Saban laid out a plan before the season so no one feels comfortable enough to slack off. Of position battles, he said, "We actually promote that. We want players to create opportunities for themselves." Yet through five games, discounting injuries or suspensions, the depth chart has stayed essentially the same. Only an injury to starting defensive end Bobby Greenwood may allow sophomore Brandon Deaderick to take his place when the Crimson Tide (3-2) plays Houston (2-2) Saturday.
