Wilson at center of Alabama's passing woes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. | John Parker Wilson passed for 240 yards and two touchdowns, setting career highs with 28 completions and 53 attempts in the University of Alabama’s 21-14 loss to Florida State.
Those numbers didn’t reflect the truth of the Crimson Tide’s offensive performance in the eyes of head coach Nick Saban.
“All that stuff about the attempts and the yards, it came after the fact,” Saban said. “It doesn’t matter.”
In fact, almost exactly half of Wilson’s passing totals — 119 yards — came in the game’s final 8:57, when he went 12 for 23 over three possessions while trying the rally Alabama, and all of it came with the Tide behind by two touchdowns and trying desperately to get back into the game.
For most of the contest, Alabama’s passing attack amounted to a series of short passes for minimal gains. No less than a dozen of Wilson’s completions went for gains of 5 yards or less, and after throwing three deep incomplete passes in the first period he rarely passed downfield until late in the game.
“They were dropping eight guys into coverage,” Wilson said. “It was the only thing we had open.”
Alabama averaged 4.5 yards per passing attempt for the game and 8.6 yards per completion, with three big gainers in the final minutes — a 25-yard reception by Matt Caddell, Brown’s 17-yard touchdown catch with 1:06 to go and DJ Hall’s reception for 24 yards — padding the average.
Wilson said the Tide offense determined to try to get the ball downfield more late in the game out of necessity.
“We just decided we would come out and take some shots and it started falling for us,” Wilson said. “We moved the ball pretty good at the end of the game.
“That’s all we have to go on. We didn’t play well.”
Offensive tackle Mike Johnson credited Florida State’s defensive front for creating pressure on Alabama’s passing game and forcing Wilson to make quick decisions to dump off short passes.
“Florida State showed a lot of defensive fronts to us,” he said. “They were quick off the ball and physical, and it showed in how much time [Wilson] had in the backfield.”
Saban made it clear that he doesn’t lay all of Alabama’s offensive woes, or the lack of production in the passing attack for much of the game, at Wilson’s feet.
“It’s no one specific guy,” Saban said. “We didn’t protect as good as we need to. We didn’t get open as good as we need to. We didn’t throw it as good as we need to. We were not in synch.”
Alabama’s total offensive output until the game’s final 8:57 was just 148 combined passing and rushing yards with zero points. By game’s end, the Tide had churned out 329 total yards and scored two touchdowns.
“We’ve got to play the whole game,” Wilson said. “We can’t come out and play just the first half or just the second half.
“We’ve got a good offense. We’ve just got to get it going again.”

Re: Wilson at center of Alabama's passing woes

We don't want Wilson to play we want somebody who is serious about winning. McElroy may or may not be the answer... but he can't do any worse than Wilson. Besides it might just show Wilson a bit of criticism is well deserved and these are the consequences.
