Of course, Fisher eventually opted for Bowden and Florida State - the lure of working under the winningest coach in college football history too great to resist.

And now, in one of the seemingly endless ironies in Alabama vs. Florida State, Fisher will be the enemy offensive coordinator against Saban - under whom he blossomed as a rising star in coaching circles while the two teamed to produce two SEC titles and a national title at LSU.

That tandem could have teamed up again at Alabama. It certainly wasn't for lack of interest from Saban.

But for Fisher, much as he said he admires Saban, a Bowden trumps a Saban.

"He called and was very interested in (hiring me)," Fisher said. "We discussed it. My wife and I, we tried to make a decision based on where we thought we needed to go at that particular time."
