Because this is an inexact science, and ultimately meaningless in the greater scheme of things. You can't judge how well a high school football will make the transition into the college ranks. You can't predict which guys will get taller, faster, smarter, better. Add in the individual coaches' impact on them, and you might as well just be casting lots to come up with these numbers.

Half right Lefty. If you start with more and better players (by ranking #'s) you will most likely have fewer bust and get a few studs. I have always thought the 3 star guys were the key if you can coach them up. All the top programs get a few 4 star guys and some get several 5 star. The 3 star guys have something to prove whereas the 5's sometimes assume stardom is a given.

Like the NFL draft - everybody gets (or should get) a good player in the 1st and 2nd round - it's the 3 - 5 that pays big dividends.

Re: Alabama Team Ranking By Recruiting

In state recruiting is the most important thing for Alabama. The rankings don't mean as much as the coaches opinions of the players. Just because someone plays at a small high school doesn't mean they can't play. It is about exposure look at Steve Smith nobody knew who he was until he exploded on the scene with the Panthers. Every college coach wished that they had seen his talent earlier. That is what makes me sad for Tyrone Prothro he never got the chance to fulfill his dreams of being a NFL All Pro.

Steve Smith is the #1 reciever for the Carolina Panthers. I don't know of any Alabama ties that he may have.

Re: Alabama Team Ranking By Recruiting

Mike Shula tried to get him to come to Alabama but he chose a smaller school in California because of a girlfriend.
