| Bama tailbacks sharing the load TUSCALOOSA -- For the most part, starter Terry Grant has given up trying to figure out Alabama's tailback rotation in games. "We don't have a clue," Grant said. "We're out there, then they wave us off, we're out. Sometimes (you wonder). I mean, you have no control over it." The newest stock report for Alabama's ever-changing backfield reads as such: Roy Upchurch is up. Jimmy Johns is down. Grant and Glen Coffee are holding steady at the first and second spots. Saban has preferred in the past to employ multiple running backs and stick with the one who was performing the best at that time. At times, the reasoning seems that simple. Other times, not so much. Three Crimson Tide tailbacks -- Grant, Coffee and Upchurch -- are in Saban's current plan heading into Saturday's 4 p.m. date with Florida State. But even the players don't know beforehand how or why each will be used. "Sometimes I'll break the huddle not even realizing who the running back is," center Antoine Caldwell said. "But it's always good to have fresh legs at the start of the fourth quarter. All three of those guys are doing a great job for us." The odd man out appears to be Johns, an experienced junior who moved to fullback and back to tailback during preseason camp. He entered the regular season as Alabama's backup tailback but has seen his offensive role decrease by the week. For the first time this season, Johns did not run the ball during Saturday.
