| Walk-ons contribute for Bama TUSCALOOSA -- Holding a stopwatch to log hang time on kicks, Mobile's Andrew Friedman had his orders and was settling in to watch Alabama's game against Arkansas from a front-row viewpoint. He was surprised as anyone when punter P.J. Fitzgerald came to him with news. Leigh Tiffin, Alabama's starting place-kicker, had gone to the locker room holding his shoulder. "You've got to get ready," Friedman was told. At that moment, Friedman learned that backup kicker Jamie Christensen's pulled thigh muscle was still too sore for duty. Thus a rare scenario of Alabama having two injured kickers forced Friedman, a walk-on from UMS-Wright, into the opening quarter of last weekend's victory. Not only did Friedman convert the game's first extra point, he hit two, thanks to an illegal procedure penalty. Although Tiffin later returned, it was the first college kick from scrimmage for Friedman and a memorable moment. "It happened so quick, I didn't really have time to think about it," Friedman said. "It was only an extra point, but for me, it was by far the pinnacle of my career so far. I did kickoffs last year, but the extra point was a lot bigger. It was exciting." Friedman, who last season booted 11 kickoffs, is one of at least nine walk-ons who have already contributed as Alabama heads into the season's fourth game at 6:45 p.m. Saturday against Georgia. That total doesn't include linebacker Darren Mustin and safety Rashad Johnson, former Crimson Tide walk-ons who are now defensive starters. Walk-ons contribute for Bama- al.com
