YOUNG GUNS: Applewhite, Bobo match wits

TUSCALOOSA -- Mike Bobo's wife gave birth to triplets last year.

No one needed to tell him about the pressure of calling plays in the Southeastern Conference.

"I get nervous before the game, and then always after the game, you replay the whole game in your head," Bobo said. "During the game, I really don't feel any nerves."

A decade after quarterbacking Georgia to a 10-win season, Bobo was promoted to offensive coordinator at his alma mater this offseason when Neil Callaway left Athens to become the head coach at UAB.

Bobo, 33, inherited play-calling duties from head coach Mark Richt and became one of the younger coordinators in college football. At 6:45 p.m. Saturday, he'll go against the youngest in 29-year-old Alabama offensive coordinator Major Applewhite, whose playing career at Texas ended in 2001.

Like Bobo, Applewhite calls plays for the Crimson Tide. It sets up one of the youngest chalkboard battles ever witnessed in college football.

"I think the longer you're out of this game as a player, the harder it is to get back in and realize what's going on," Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford said. "It's easy to relate to guys you know were in the heat of the battle and played and did it not too long ago. You probably watched them on TV and don't even know it."

Applewhite is doing a fantastic job considering the talent level.
