| With Andre Smith leading the way, Tide lets offensive line take over TUSCALOOSA - Andre Smith considers himself accommodating. In fact, the University of Alabama left tackle is more than pleased to offer his services. "They can run behind me all day," Smith said. "I don't mind." The Crimson Tide coaches often take him up on his offer, and with some serious results. But it's not only Smith, the sophomore from Huffman High. Late in Saturday's game against Vanderbilt, Alabama wanted to put the game away. So what did offensive coordinator Major Applewhite do? He allowed the offensive line to take over. Look back at the third quarter in the 24-10 win over the Commodores. On a drive that began on the the Tide 14, eight of the 10 plays called were runs. Quarterback John Parker Wilson turned another one into a run by scrambling. The result was a dominating 10-play, 86-yard stomach-punch of a march down the field. It might have ended in a 2-yard run by running back Terry Grant, but it was the offensive linemen who celebrated. "I love it," said senior left guard Justin Britt of Cullman. "Come out, knock them off the ball - that's what being an offensive lineman is all about, really. There is no better feeling than that." With No.16 University of Arkansas looming Saturday at 5:45 p.m. (ESPN), much of the talk this week has been about 2006 Heisman Trophy runner-up Darren McFadden and his sidekick Felix Jones. Both running backs are celebrated and both keep defensive coordinators up late at night. One way for the Crimson Tide to stop this duo: Keep them off the field.
