Assistants Steele, Pendry will make $350,000 each

TUSCALOOSA - The football staff hired by coach Nick Saban will combine to make more than $2.7 million for their first year at Alabama.

Defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and offensive line coach/assistant head coach Joe Pendry top that list, each making $350,000, according to documents provided Tuesday to The Huntsville Times.

The salaries were made available through an open records request by The Times.

The salaries are pending approval by the University of Alabama system board of trustees. The trustees are scheduled to meet this week but the football salaries are not on the agenda, according to Kellee Reinhart, vice chancellor for system relations.

The salaries of Steele and Pendry each exceed the $300,000 salary former defensive coordinator Joe Kines received in 2006-07 as the highest-paid member of former coach Mike Shula's staff.

The football staff, according to the salary figures, includes 14 people. Nine of those are on-field assistant coaches and their salaries add up to $2.245 million for the first year.
