So as this week goes on, I keep looking back at stuff that happened on Saturday that hasn't been written about or mentioned much. Slim picking on this beat, with so much interest and coverage. But one random thing that jumped out at me:
True freshman quarterback
Nick Fanuzzi played against Western Carolina. It was the last drive of the fourth quarter and the San Antonio
native didn't attempt a pass. But barring an injury, it also means he won't redshirt. Hmmmmm...
So this morning, I asked Alabama coach Nick Saban why he played Fanuzzi. The gist of the answer -- It's an insurance policy. Here is his entire response:
"Well, I think we used it as an opportunity for the guy to get into the game and to play," Saban said a few minutes ago. "Our first priority right now, because of the depth on our team is not necessarily to redshirt guys. We're one injury away from him being the backup quarterback, being the third(-stringer). So, we wanted to try to play the guy some so that if he has to go into a game and play down the road, he's been in a game before and it's not the first time around. So, it was really kind of an insurance policy to do it. We still want to try to develop him. And if the opportunity presents itself, we'll play him down the road."
From that perspective, I can understand the decision. Anyone agree or disagree?
