| Grant shines as starter; Saban wins first game with Tide TUSCALOOSA - A quick handshake for the opposing coach, and Nick Saban was off. From the 50-yard line straight through the tunnel, as photographers tripped over themselves to catch one final shot. Eight months of buildup and anticipation, the likes of which even one of the nation's most storied programs may never have seen, was over. The University of Alabama's 27th football coach debuted Saturday night with a 52-6 win over Western Carolina, a Division I-AA team. "And what a debut it was," defensive end Wallace Gilberry said. As a packed crowd of 92,138 tried to shake Bryant-Denny Stadium, and thousands tailgated outside to celebrate the beginning of The Saban Era, the new coach kept his head down after meeting briefly with WCU coach Kent Briggs. Today, as he reflects on his first victory wearing Crimson, Saban said, he will feel no relief. "When we get done playing the last play of the last game, then I'll be relieved," Saban said. "I'm always looking forward to the next game." Grant shines as starter; Saban wins first game with Tide- al.com
