| For Wilson, maturity coming with experience TUSCALOOSA | In trying to read every tiny tea leaf about the upcoming University of Alabama football season, prognosticators try everything. The predictors (and I belong in this boat, too) try to analyze how every instance of players jockeying for position, or every mood swing of the team, is going to affect the record. And, in the course of poring over the minutiae, sometimes some fairly large and significant things — the sort of things that can really impact a football team — get overlooked. For instance, John Parker Wilson isn’t a sophomore any more. He’s a junior now. That’s obvious to anyone who can read a roster, of course. But the quarterback position is so important in college football, the idea that Wilson is a year older, a year stronger and, most importantly, going into the 2007 season with a full year of experience under his belt, means a lot. It probably means a lot more than who the third-string safety is going to be. Now, Wilson is still developing as a quarterback. He’s learning a new offense. I’m not sure I’d go quite as far as some observers, who prefer Wilson to any other quarterback in the Southeastern Conference, although I would say that Alabama’s starter is as sound (or more) as any other starter in the Western Division.
