| Saban applauds defensive effort in scrimmage Sunday, August 19, 2007 IAN R. RAPOPORT News staff writer TUSCALOOSA - All week, University of Alabama defensive players made no excuses for their performance in last week's scrimmage. Instead, they increased their preparation, worked on fundamentals, and participated in countless drills focusing on tackling. Apparently, it worked. Following Saturday's scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium, the second and final before the Sept. 1 opener against Western Carolina, coach Nick Saban applauded the unit's response. "We tackled better, we didn't give up as many explosive plays, we were in better position to make plays, we had some turnovers, we made less mental errors," Saban said. "So there were some good things on defense. I think we did improve." If you're keeping score at home, that's one scrimmage for the offense, one for the defense.
