| Karate helps Tide improve Bill Belichick summoned Nick Saban to his office in 1991. When Saban arrived in the office of the then-Cleveland Browns head coach, Belichick introduced him to Joe Kim. "He said, 'This guy said he can make our players better if we have a karate class,'" Saban recalled. ![]() ![]() ![]() Saban, then the Browns' defensive coordinator, snickered. "I went downstairs and watched film with the guy, and then I started listening to what the guy was talking about in terms of attacking sources, leverage, and how you leverage people and how you hit them, balance and body control you have to have so you can do that," Saban said. Saban filed a report with Belichick, and soon thereafter the Browns were taking Kim's karate class. "Our players loved it," Saban said. "They wanted to do it every time. It made them more flexible, reduced stiffness and they didn't get as many pulls. It did help the offensive and defensive linemen with pass rush and attacking sources. It helped all the players who use their hands in football. I believe it." Saban has implemented karate at every stop since then, including Alabama, where he took over in January. He said Thursday he hasn't received much feedback from the Tide players about the classes, taught this summer by an on-campus karate instructor. Karate helps Tide improve- al.com
