Tide backup QB gets to learn under childhood idol

Like so many football players growing up in the Dallas area, Greg McElroy was a University of Texas fan. Specifically, he idolized No.11.
As Major Applewhite led the Longhorns to comeback after comeback in place of quarterback Chris Simms, it was no surprise which side the 13-year-old took in the national soap opera.
"I mean, a red-headed kid with freckles, you look at him and you see yourself," said McElroy, who fits the same description. "Everyone in Texas, everyone in college football appreciated the type of adversity Major Applewhite had to overcome. It made me want to go out and play every Saturday."
