Former Tider On Team USA

Former Tider On USA Team

By UofA Media Relations

Posted Jun 21, 2007

Former Alabama softball standout Kelly Kretschman has been named to the 2007 USA Softball Women’s National Team that will compete in three events over the summer.

Kretschman is one of 17 players named to the squad following the Women’s National Team selection camp in which 35 of the nation’s top female softball players competed for a spot on the team. The former Alabama All-America joins two others as newcomers to the National Team in 2007. Of the 17 players selected, 14 were members of last summer’s World Cup and World Championship gold medal team.
USA Softball will start the summer’s festivities June 30 – July 8 when they travel to Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, to compete in the Canada Cup for the first time since 2003. They will then return to the United States for the KFC World Cup of Softball, July 12-16, in Oklahoma City. The U.S. will be looking to defend its World Cup title from 2006. The busy month of July will wrap up with the USOC Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, July 23-29. USA Softball has claimed the last five Pan American Games gold medals.
Kretschman, a four-time All-America for the Crimson Tide, was one of 22 members of the National Training Team selected in September, 2006. She has competed for the U.S. the past three seasons, capturing a gold medal in 2004 with the U.S. Olympic team. Last season she helped lead the team to the Japan Cup Championship with a 2-for-3 performance and two RBI in a 7-0 championship game win.
University of Arizona Head Coach Mike Candrea will head the coaching staff of the 2007 USA squad. Former Alabama assistant coach Karen Johns, now at the University of Virginia, is one of three assistant coaches on staff.
