Davidson Drafted, Then Traded

For about 10 minutes Thursday night, The University of Alabama’s Jermareo Davidson was a Golden State Warrior. Minutes later, he became a Charlotte Bobcat. The 6-foot-10 All-Southeastern Conference forward, who was a senior for the Crimson Tide this past season, was the 36th overall pick, drafted in the 2nd round of the 2007 NBA draft.


Former Alabama basketball star Jermareo Davidson was selected by Golden State, then traded him to Charlotte in a deal that also included Jason Richardson.
The Atlanta native did not get to hear his name called. ESPN, which was airing the draft live, was at a commercial break when he was selected. However, the network continues a scroll across the bottom with the picks, including during commercials for the draft. Davidson said not only was he drafted earlier than he thought he’d go, but he missed the moment his name flashed across the bottom of the screen.
“I was surprised,” said Davidson who watched the draft with about 12 friends and family members at a home in Atlanta. “It caught me off guard. They did it during a commercial break and I was in front of the tv but I was looking down. All of a sudden my mom (Madonna Davidson) started screaming. She was screaming that she saw my name run across the bottom of the screen during the commercial. I had missed it because I was looking down.
“This is something I’ve always dreamed about, playing in the NBA. I feel like I’ve worked hard to make it happen, but at the same time, I am very grateful to all the people in my life who helped me make it happen. I appreciate all the people who have been there for me.”
Davidson, 22, averaged 10.1 points and 7.3 rebounds for his four year career at Alabama. He averaged 14.0 points and 8.2 rebounds at Alabama this past season, his senior year. He finished his Alabama career ranked 10th all-time in rebounding with 918 career rebounds and tied for 23rd all-time in scoring with 1,268 career points in 126 career games. He started in 121 of those 126 career games.
“We’re extremely happy for Jermareo,” said Alabama Coach Mark Gottfried. “I think it’s important to note that it’s extremely gratifying to see a player who has gone through so much this past year get rewarded. And he’s improved so much in his development from his freshman year to now in being drafted. I’m very proud for him.” Davidson’s started in all 30 games he played this past season in a senior season marred by the double tragedies of losing both his brother and his girlfriend within weeks of one another in November and December. He’s the 32nd University of Alabama player to be drafted by the NBA, and the 39th NBA player for the Tide. Alabama’s last player drafted was Mo Williams who went to the Utah Jazz in the 2nd round as the 47th overall pick in 2003. He played for the Jazz in 2003 then signed as a free agent with the Milwaukee Bucks the following season and has been with the Bucks ever since, though he is currently a free agent.
