| Mal Moore To Be Honored Mal Moore To Be Honored ![]() Mal Moore to receive ASHOF honor By Bill Miller Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Posted May 31, 2007 Mal Moore, athletics director at The University of Alabama will be one of two recognized as the 2007 Distinguished Alabama Sportsmen at the 39th Annual Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on Sunday in Birmingham. Mal Moore has been associated with The University of Alabama as a student-athlete, graduate assistant, assistant coach, offensive coordinator, administrator and now as athletics director. His years of service at The University including as a student, span 39 years. As a scholarshipped player for the legendary Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, he played quarterback on the 1961 Crimson Tide National Championship team. He graduated in 1963 with a degree in sociology and in 1964 completed his Master's degree in Secondary Education, also from Alabama. He coached football for 31 years, 22 of those at Alabama. After being a graduate assistant in 1964, he was the defensive backfield coach for the Crimson Tide from 1965-1970. From 1971-1982 he was the quarterbacks coach and from 1975-1982 he took on the additional duties as Offensive Coordinator. He left Alabama for a few years with coaching stops at Montana State, Notre Dame, and the NFL's Phoenix Cardinals. He returned to The Capstone with Coach Gene Stallings and was the Offensive Coordinator for the 1992 National Championship. Either as a player or coach or administrator, he has been a part of seven national championships, 14 SEC Championships and 27 bowl trips. He has the distinction of calling all of the offensive plays for the last four national championship teams. He is also the only man connected with the Alabama coaching staffs, past and present, who was a member of all seven of those titles. As athletics director one of his main goals has been the upgrading of the athletics facilities at The Capstone. He spearheaded a capital campaign to raise a $100 million dollars for facility improvements. The success of the campaign can be seen in the dramatic changes in the athletics complex, from the total renovation of Coleman Coliseum, to the refurbishing of Bryant Hall into a student-athletic academic complex, to the building of new tennis and soccer complexes. The most dramatic change was the completion of the north end zone of Bryant-Denny Stadium project. The improvements included new sky boxes, VIP seating, new home locker room and a plaza area that features statues of national championship coaches Wallace Wade, Frank Thomas, Paul Bryant and Gene Stallings. Bryant-Denny Stadium is now among the nation's largest with seating capacity of 92,138. Moore is building an administrative legacy that will be hard to duplicate. He and David Housel, former athletics director at Auburn, will be recognized as the 2007 Distinguished Alabama Sportsmen. You know, you really need a home office though. LOL. Someone really should be in charge of getting the TP LOL. Guess you got to get big, like Time Warner big! Though I am not sure I would put the home office in Nashville. That's so last year. I think it should be in North Carolina, like Durham or something. Of course, you can stay in Alabama if you would like. You could be like a branch. LOL. |
