Antoine Caldwell Named to Remmington Trophy Watch List

Antoine Caldwell Named to Rimington Trophy Watch List Release: 05/01/2007

Antoine Caldwell has started all 25 games in his Alabama career
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Junior center Antoine Caldwell was named to the 2007 Rimington Trophy Spring Watch List on Tuesday.
For the second straight year, Caldwell, a native of Montgomery, finds his name on the prestigious list. He was named to the watch list prior to the 2006 season after only playing one game at center in his collegiate career.
Last season Caldwell started all 13 games at center and guided the Crimson Tide offensive line. He was named to the All-SEC second team by the league’s 12 coaches. He was also selected the SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week on Sept. 4. He was one of only five players to tally over 800 snaps, finishing with a total of 810 plays on the year. He was second on the team with 58 knockdowns during the regular season, recording five or more knockdowns in six of the 12 games.
As a freshman Caldwell was one of the top freshman offensive linemen in the country. He played 772 snaps and earned Rivals.com first team Freshman All-America honors and was a Freshman All-SEC pick. He played most of the season as a guard before moving to center for the 2006 AT&T Cotton Bowl.
The Rimington Trophy is an eight year old award presented by Canon, Cornhusker Marriott and Logitech. The award is hosted by the Boomer Esiason Foundation.
West Virginia's Dan Mozes, Minnesota's Greg Eslinger, Michigan's David Baas (2004 co-winner), LSU's Ben Wilkerson (2004 co-winner), Virginia Tech's Jake Grove, Miami's Brett Romberg, Ohio State's LeCharles Bentley, and Nebraska's Dominic Raiola are past recipients.
Esiason created his foundation in 1993 to support research and treatment of cystic fibrosis. Esiason and Dave Rimington were teammates on the Cincinnati Bengals from 1984-87. Rimington, the award's namesake, was a consensus first team All- America center at Nebraska in 1981 and 1982 during which he became the John Outland Trophy's only double winner as the nation's premiere college interior lineman.

The winner is selected by determining the consensus All-American center pick from four existing All America Teams, including the American Football Coaches Association, Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and Football Writers Association of America

The center with the most first team votes will be determined the winner. If there is a tie with first team votes, then the center with most second team votes will win. If there is still a tie, the winner will be determined by the Rimington Trophy committee.
The winner will be honored at an awards banquet at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska in January of 2008.

Caldwell is one of 20 juniors named to the list of 47 preseason candidates.

Can't find exactly where Caldwell finished, but I know he wasn't among the finalists, which were Mark Bihl (Michigan), Doug Datish (Ohio State), Ryan Kalil (USCa), Jonathan Luigs (Arkansas), Darnell Stapleton (Rutgers) and the winner, Dan Mozes (West Virginia).

Gee I wonder if that was due to less TV time?

Thanks Lefty. Maybe with the new atmosphere surrounding the team and the TV time resulting from it,this year will be a better year for him.

No problem! Caldwell's good, but with all due respect, no way he was beating out Mozes or Kalil last season. As you say, maybe this will be his year.

I totally agree. He has a little more experience now though.

It won't hurt to play on Alabama's 13th National Title Team this year either.
