Re: Crimson Tide Softball Standings

Several Alabama Softball Players Set Career Highs in Rout of Louisiana Tech Release: 03/27/2007

Mallory Benak was 4-of-6 with four runs scored on Tuesday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After falling two spots to No. 4 in the this week’s rankings, the No. 4 Alabama softball team came right back with 27 runs in 10 innings for a pair of victories over visiting Louisiana Tech Tuesday at the Alabama Softball Complex.
The Tide outscored the Lady Techsters 12-4 in the first game and 15-0 in the second to improve to 33-3 on the year. La. Tech drops to 16-19 with the two losses.
Senior Mallory Benak was honored during the first game with her senior night and what a night it was for the Dothan, Ala. native. She went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in both games. She also had two stolen bases in the first game and a double in the second.
“I was really excited,” said Benak. “I felt like I have done something. It has been awhile since I have got to play a whole game and I was a little nervous, but as soon as I started getting into it, it was like old times. It made me feel really good today.”
Leading 11-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Benak started things off with a single to left field. She then stole second to put herself in scoring position and scored the winning run on a single up the middle by Jordan Praytor. Benak’s hit to lead off the inning gave her a career high with two hits in the game, which she would match later on in the second contest of the doubleheader. She also set new career highs with two runs scored in each game.
The Tide scored two runs in each of the first three innings in the first game and exploded for five runs in the fourth. Kelley Montalvo didn’t waste any time jumpstarting the Bama offense. Batting as the leadoff hitter for the first time in her collegiate career, she led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to left field. It was her sixth long ball of the season and the first time since March 21, 2004, that a Tide player led off the game with a home run. Ashley Courtney was the last to accomplish the feat against Kentucky.
“Starting off Coach Murphy tells me I was going to be leading off and we are used to hearing (Brittany) Rogers,” said Montalvo. “I just wanted to try and get on base, maybe something in the gap to let somebody bring me in. She threw me a good pitch inside and I took advantage of it.”
Charlotte Morgan also hit her sixth home run in the first game, a two-run shot that followed Mandy Burford’s triple in the third inning. Morgan has hit five of her six home runs in March. She went on to finish the day a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored and three RBI. She also had two walks to put her on base in all six of her plate appearances.
Alabama stole seven bases in the first game to add to the onslaught. The finished the game with 13 hits. Montalvo led the way going 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and three RBI. Michelle Menningmann was 2-for-2 with a walk, a RBI and a run scored as nine different UA players crossed home plate in the game.
“We didn’t have the weekend we wanted at LSU but we came back hungrier tonight and I think we showed that,” said Menningmann. “It was really exciting when you can get people in there who don’t start all the time or play all the time and have them be able to produce. I was just seeing the ball well and really tried to put the ball in play and produce for the team since I am not an everyday starter.”
Although she allowed two earned runs on four hits in three innings before coming out of the game, Morgan earned the victory to improve to 7-2. Blair Potter pitched two hitless innings and struck out two to pick up the save as Alabama led 6-4 when she entered the game.
Ashley Cameron hit her seventh home run of the season to lead Louisiana Tech. The scored four runs on four hits but only two of them were earned as three Bama errors contributed to the runs. Krissi Oliver fell to 11-13 after allowing nine earned runs in 3 2/3 innings.
The Crimson Tide didn’t waste any time getting things started in the second game either. They scored four runs in the first inning and six more in the second to quickly take a 10-0 advantage.
The big hit came in the second inning when Alabama loaded the bases for Kellie Eubanks. The sophomore shortstop came through with her first career grand slam and fourth home run of the season over the center field wall. The grand slam was the first for a UA player since last season when Montalvo hit one against Arkansas. The four RBI gave her a career high and she would also go on to score three runs in the game, also a career best.
“I was just trying to get a hit and score a few runs,” said Eubanks. “I didn’t think I was going to hit a home run. I just wanted to put the ball in play and see what happens.”
Menningmann set a new career high with four runs scored in the contest to lead the team. She hit her third home run of the season and also had a triple in the game. Six different UA players scored two or more runs in the game. Katie Johnson went 2-for-3 with one RBI and Morgan was 2-of-2 with a walk, two runs scored and one RBI to extend her hitting streak to nine games. For the game the Tide tallied 10 hits and seven walks to piece together 15 runs in just four innings.
Allison Moore pitched five innings and only allowed one hit with a walk and seven strikeouts to pick up her first collegiate shutout. After the leadoff hitter in the game, Emma Barnes, singled to left field, Moore retired nine straight batters and 15 of the next 17 batters.
Alabama will jump back into SEC play this weekend when they host Georgia in a three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday and wrap up the series with a 1:30 start on Sunday.

Re: Crimson Tide Softball Standings

No. 3 Alabama Hosts No. 22 Georgia For Weekend Series Release: 03/2
Alabama is 33-3 overall and 10-3 in the SEC
What a Difference a Year Makes
Last season Lauren Parker played in 30 games at Baylor and hit .266 with 10 RBI. This season she has been on a tear, leading the team in several categories and ranking among the SEC leaders. She leads the team with a .465 batting avg. to go with 40 hits, 30 runs, four doubles, two triples, eight home runs and 31 RBI. She has recorded an .837 slugging pct. in 31 starts and a .515 on-base percentage. She has also been effective on the basepaths and in the field with 10 stolen bases and a fielding percentage of .981. She is batting .425 (17-of-40) to lead the team in SEC play. She also has three home runs and nine RBI in 13 conference games.
Monty Rounds Out Tide Batting Order
Sophomore third baseman Kelley Montalvo has batted ninth in the Tide batting order in 23 games this season and is producing like a 3-4-5 hitter. She is batting .329 (27-of-82) with six home runs and 19 RBI. She has scored 23 runs and leads the team with six doubles. She has also walked 12 times and has a .417 on-base percentage. In her last eight games she is batting .450 (9-of-20) with four home runs, eight RBI and five runs scored.
Patience is a Virtue
The Crimson Tide team has drawn 108 walks on the season and has five players with double-digit walk totals. Kellie Eubanks leads the team with 16 walks while Mandy Burford and Charlotte Morgan each have 15 walks. ordan Praytor and Kelley Montalvo have 12 walks apiece.
Put the Bat on the Ball
In a total of 1,024 plate appearances this season, Alabama hitters have only struck out 122 times. Only one out of every eight plate appearances has resulted in a strikeout. There have four players who have started over 30 games and recorded less than 10 strikeouts. Lauren Parker has only struck out four times in 97 plate appearances while Charlotte Morgan has gone 96 plate appearances with only four strikeouts. Brittany Rogers has gone down eight times in 120 plate appearances and Kelley Montalvo has nine strikeouts in 95 plate appearances.
Powerful Pitching
Chrissy Owens (Miami, Fla.) started the season 16-0 before receiving her first loss on Sunday at No. 8 LSU. Before the loss she had been nearly unhittable in the previous six games, allowing just one run in 23 2/3 innings. On the year she has a 0.75 ERA with 11 earned runs allowed in 102.1 innings. She has 86 strikeouts compared to 25 walks. She has pitched eight complete game shutouts and combined for three others. She has allowed one run or less in 15 of her 17 starts. Her best inning is the second where she has not allowed a run in 17 innings and has 21 K’s.
Offensive Firepower
Alabama is batting .333 as a team this season. Six players are hitting .300 or better. Lauren Parker leads the team and the SEC in both batting avg. (.465) and on-base percentage (.515). Brittany Rogers is batting at a clip of .397 (46-of-116) to lead the team in hits. Charlotte Morgan is hitting .388 (31-of-80) and has a .480 OBP while Jordan Praytor is batting .382 (39-of-102). The Tide has outscored its opponents 257-49 on the season, a margin of 5.8 runs per game.

Manufacturing Runs
Alabama is scoring 7.1 runs per game to lead the SEC. The 257 runs scored is 22 more than LSU, who has also played one more game. Alabama has scored three or more runs in all but two games this season. They won 1-0 at South Carolina and lost 3-0 at LSU. The Tide has made it common practice to light up the scoreboard, scoring 10 or more runs nine times and five or more runs in 27 of the 36 games. The Tide have run-ruled its opponent 14 times.
Big Innings
One of the big reasons that Alabama is 33-3 this season has been their ability to put together innings of three or more runs. They have had an inning with at least three runs in 22 of the 36 contests. They recorded their biggest inning against Winthrop with a 10-run second inning. It tied for the second highest run total in a single inning in school history. Alabama has also recorded nine and seven-run innings this season. They have scored six runs five times, five runs five times, four runs eight times and three runs 13 times. They have outscored their opponents 45-6 in the second inning and 40-4 in the first inning.
Who’s on First
Alabama has received production throughout the lineup with each player in the 1-9 slots contributing game-in and game-out. Six different players have recorded at least a .400 on base percentage for the season. Lauren Parker has the highest OBP at .515 with 40 hits, six walks and five HBP. Charlotte Morgan has found her way on with 31 hits, 15 walks and one HBP for a .480 OBP. Jordan Praytor has posted 39 hits to go along with 12 walks and three hit-by-pitch for a .462 OBP. Mandy Burford has 30 hits, 15 walks and four HBP for a .450 OBP.

Two-Out RBI
With two outs you can’t count the Tide batters out. They have produced 72 runs this season with two outs. Lauren Parker leads the team with 14 two-out RBI while Jordan Praytor has driven in 10 runs. Parker is batting .429 (12-of-2 with two outs. Brittany Rogers is hitting .444 (12-of-27) with two outs and has seven RBI. Ashley Holcombe has also added seven RBI with two outs. Mandy Burford leads the team with 33 RBI, seven of which have come with two outs.

100 Stolen Bases and Counting
The Crimson Tide have blazed their way to a SEC-leading 100 stolen bases in 36 games this season, an average of 2.78 stolen bases per game. They have only been caught stealing 17 times on the year for a success rate of 85.5-percent. They have 11 more stolen bases than any other SEC school. Brittany Rogers leads the team with 26 stolen bases and has only been caught stealing twice. Jordan Praytor sits at 17 on the year while Mandy Burford has 16 stolen bases. Lauren Parker is 10-of-12 and Mallory Benak has nine stolen bases. The Tide has stolen 84 more bases than their opponents.
D-Fence
With a defense the caliber of this year’s Crimson Tide unit, Alabama’s pitchers have been able to relax and put the ball in play knowing the defense will come through and make the play. UA ranks second in the SEC with a .979 fielding pct. and have only committed 21 errors in 969 total chances. They have 19 games with no errors and have only committed multiple errors in three games this season with two against Texas-San Antonio in the third game of the year, two against Arkansas and three against Louisiana Tech. Ten players have a 1.000 fielding pct.
Score, Score, Score
Sophomore center fielder Brittany Rogers terrorizes opponents when she reaches base, which is early and often. She leads the team with 46 hits and 26 stolen bases but also has scored 36 runs. She has scored a run in 15 of the last 23 games. On the season she has scored in 24 of the Tide’s 36 games, has 10 games with two runs scored and matched a career high with three runs scored against Mississippi State in the SEC opener.
Undefeated
Senior starting pitcher Blair Potter has a distinction not many collegiate players have. She is undefeated in her Division I career with a 12-0 record at Alabama. Since transferring from Wallace-Dothan Community College, Potter has gone through the ranks without a loss. She has a career 1.79 ERA after posting a 1.35 ERA this season. In 2007 she has recorded one shutout in her nine starts and has won seven games. She has allowed only 10 earned runs in 51 2/3 innings with 35 hits allowed, nine walks and 49 strikeouts. Right-handed batters are hitting just .153 against the Tide’s first ever left-handed hurler.
Multi-Hit Games
The Crimson Tide players have tallied 74 multiple-hit games this season. So far 13 different players have posted a game with two or more hits. Brittany Rogers leads the way with 15 multi-hit games, including 12 contests with two hits and three with three hits. Lauren Parker has tallied two or more hits in her last five games to give her 14 multi-hit games and Jordan Praytor has nine on the year. Praytor is the only player this season with four hits in a game.
Multi-RBI Games
Part of the reason why the Crimson Tide are averaging over seven runs per game is the number of times they have had a player with two or more RBI in a game. Lauren Parker leads the way with 10 multi-RBI games while Jordan Praytor has seven multi-RBI games and Mandy Burford has six contests with two or more RBI.
Career Highs
Michelle Menningmann scored a career-high four runs on Tuesday while Kellie Eubanks set career highs with four RBI and three runs scored. Mallory Benak also tallied career highs with two runs, two hits and two RBI. Allison Moore only allowed one hit for her first career shutout.
Milestone Watch
Several Alabama players are close to setting personal milestones or moving up in the Crimson Tide record book. Jordan Praytor continues to etch her place in the record books. She needs 9 hits to move into 12th on the career list. Dani Woods needs 9 RBI to move in to 11th all-time. Mandy Burford needs four runs for 100 in her career while Brittany Rogers is also four runs shy of the century mark and 7 SB shy of second on the career list.

Re: Crimson Tide Softball Standings

Alabama Softball Uses 10-Run Inning to Split Doubleheader With Georgia Release: 03/31/2007

Charlotte Morgan hit her first career grand slam on Saturday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 3 Crimson Tide softball team rallied from a loss in the first of three games against Georgia, scoring 10 runs in the second inning to lead to a 10-2 victory over the Bulldogs Saturday at the Alabama Softball Complex.
After Georgia came back to win the first game 2-1, they came out and scored a run in the first inning of the second contest. Following an error by Tide shortstop Kellie Eubanks, Melissa Wood drove a double over the head of Dani Woods in right field to score the run.
Everything came together for Alabama in the second inning. Mandy Burford started things off by drawing a walk on a full count. She then stole second with one out setting up a Eubanks walk to put runners on first and second. Ashley Holcombe laced a single to right field to load the bases and Kelley Montalvo evened the score with a single through the right side.
Brittany Rogers gave the Tide a 2-1 lead with a high bouncing single towards the shortstop. Jordan Praytor then swung at the first pitch and knocked in two runs on a single up the middle to make the score 4-1. A double steal by Rogers and Praytor set up a walk by Lauren Parker to fill the bases.
The next batter was Charlotte Morgan and she stayed alive with two strikes, hitting a foul ball to left field. On a 1-2 count Morgan crushed the next pitch over the fence in left field for her first collegiate grand slam. It was the seventh home run of the season for Morgan. The home run extended her hitting streak to 11 games, nine straight in SEC play. She now has hit a home run against six of the Tide’s last seven opponents.
“The grand slam felt good,” said Morgan. “I know the pitcher and we go to the same pitching coach back home. I knew she was coming with the rise and hit it. I couldn’t even believe what happened. It was cool.”
Kacey Coonce came in to pitch for Kate Gaskill following the home run. Coonce, making her first appearance on the mound in 2007, walked Burford and then gave up a two-run shot by Dani Woods. The home run to right field was the third of the season for Woods and capped a 10-run inning. The 10 runs in a single inning matched a season-high for Alabama. They also scored 10 runs in the third inning against Winthrop on Feb. 25.
“As a team we decided we were going to respond,” said Rogers. “We needed to pull something together. It is something we have struggled with but I think we are on the verge of fixing it. It felt great to see Charlotte (Morgan) come through. I know it meant a lot to her and it meant a lot to us too.”
Blair Potter allowed another run in the third inning but would go the distance to pick up her eighth win of the season and remain undefeated at Alabama. She allowed one earned run on five hits in five innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Gaskill fell to 2-4 on the year with the loss.
Nine different UA players scored in the second inning with Burford notching two runs. Morgan finished 1-for-3 with a run and four RBI. Woods went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI while Praytor also drove in two runs. Wood led the Bulldogs with two hits in the contest and a RBI.
“We didn’t feel good giving that first one to them,” said Morgan. “We wanted to go out there and show them that this is our field and they are not taking that from us.”
Alabama led for most of the first game of the doubleheader. The Tide came through with a pair of two-out hits in the third inning to go up 1-0. Praytor lined a single to left field and then stole second to put herself in scoring position. Parker brought her around to score with a bloop single that found its way to the grass between three Georgia players.
Tide starting pitcher Chrissy Owens had a shutout until the seventh inning when the Bulldogs came through with a pair of hits to extend the game. Following a leadoff single by Victoria Sanders, Owens struck out the next hitter and got a groundout from Georgia’s leading hitter, Kellie Middleton. However, Sojourner Moody kept the game alive with a bunt single that dribbled right in front of Holcombe at home plate. Wood then singled to left field to score Sanders and force extra innings.
Parker hit a one-out double to center field in the eighth inning but the Tide could not bring her around to score. That set up what would be the game-winning run in the ninth as Wood came through again with a groundout to second base to score a run and make it 2-1. The ball was hit hard right at Parker who attempted to tag Moody for a double play but the umpire, Keith Keakney, ruled the tag did not touch the runner. The tag would have ended the inning without any runs scored.
With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Montalvo drew a walk and Rogers lined a single to center field, but Christie Hamilton was able to get Praytor to pop one up and end the game.
“It happens in the game of softball, especially in the SEC,” said Rogers. “Once we got on base we thought Jordan (Praytor) was going to get a hit and next time she is in that spot she will get a hit.”
Hamilton improved to 9-7 on the season after allowing one run on seven hits in nine innings with five walks. Owens took the loss to fall to 16-2 on the year. Sh
