| Re: Crimson Tide Softball Standings Mandy Burford Receives 9-0 Victory in Homecoming Game Release: 04/17/2007 Mandy Burford had 1,400 hometown fans come out to see her on Tuesday TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 2 University of Alabama softball made a two hour trek to Oxford, Ala. on Tuesday and earned a 9-0 victory in five innings in front of 1,400 of senior Mandy Burford’s hometown fans. Burford, a native of neighboring Anniston, Ala., drove in a run and scored a run in her hometown trip as the Crimson Tide improved to 43-4 on the season. The Bears fell to 9-38 overall with the loss. As the sun went down in straightaway center both teams struggled early on as the pitchers took advantage sending down their opponents 1-2-3 in the first inning. The Crimson Tide came alive in the second inning with four runs. Charlotte Morgan drew a leadoff walk and scored two batters later when Michelle Menningmann hit a two-run home run to left field. The ball tipped off the outstretched glove of Mercer left fielder Holly Oglesbee and over the fence. The home run was the fourth of the season for Menningmann, who earned her 12th start of the year. Kelley Montalvo made it back-to-back home runs for the Tide with a shot over the wall in left center. It was her eighth home run of the season and second time she went back-to-back in 2007. She followed Ashley Holcombe’s home run in the seventh inning to tie the score at LSU, a game UA eventually lost 5-4 in eight innings. The two home runs moved Alabama to 62 long balls on the season, matching the second highest single season total set in 2000. The 1998 team holds the school record with 73. Kellie Eubanks blooped a single down the left field line and scored the fourth run of the second inning on a double to left by Brittany Rogers. The double was the fifth of the year for Rogers. The Crimson Tide added two more runs in the third inning. Burford was hit-by-a-pitch to start the frame and scored on three consecutive wild pitches. Jessica Smith lined a single through the left side and stole second base to set up Montalvo for a bloop RBI that dropped in between the shortstop and center field for a double. In the fourth inning, Holcombe drew a walk and moved to third on a double to the opposite field by Alex Blewitt. Burford brought the Tide’s seventh run in with a sacrifice fly to center field for her 35th RBI of the year. After Mallory Benak was hit-by-a-pitch, Dani Woods hit a hard grounder up the middle to knock in two more runs and make the score 9-0. Blair Potter was dominant in four innings of work, allowing just one hit while striking out six batters. She improved to 12-0 on the year with the win. Chrissy Owens pitched a perfect fifth inning with one strikeout. Stephanie Rossman fell to 3-12 with the loss. Menningmann finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Montalvo was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a run and two RBI. Nine different players scored a run in the contest for Bama. CJ Martin had the lone hit for Mercer in the third inning. Benak and Smith each stole a base in the contest to give the Tide 132 for the year. As a team they have the second most stolen bases in school history with 132, only six shy of the 2000 team’s record of 138. Alabama will return to SEC play for the first time in two weeks when they head to Oxford, Miss. for a three game series with Ole Miss this weekend. They will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the Sunday series finale scheduled for 1:30 p.m. |

Crimson Tide in the Rankings Alabama is ranked No. 2 in the country in both the USA Today/NFCA Top-25 and ESPN.com/USA Softball Top-25. Since the first regular season poll came out the Crimson Tide has been ranked in the top five every week with this week marking the 10th straight for Bama. The Tide have been ranked in the top 10 for 27 straight weeks and have been ranked in 71 consecutive polls. RPI Has Bama No. 2 Alabama was listed No. 2 in the second NFCA Simulated Ratings Percentage Index released last Friday. For the second straight week the Crimson Tide was listed with the second best RPI in the nation. Arizona held the top spot both times with the top strength of schedule. The Tide has the second best winning percentage of any team in the nation. Tennessee has the top win percentage but with a strength of schedule of 45th. The Crimson Tide’s strength of schedule was 10th for the first RPI and is currently 28th. One of Top Programs Since 2000 Since 2000 the Alabama softball team has won the second most games of any team in college softball with 416 victories. They are only four wins shy of the winningest program in the country, Arizona, at 420 wins. LSU is close behind with 410 overall victories. Going Out in Style Seniors Michelle Menningmann (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Mallory Benak (Dothan, Ala.) have made the most of their playing time as seniors. Menningmann was 2-for-3 on Tuesday with a home run, double and two RBI. Coming into the season she had never hit a home run but has tallied four in 2007. She is batting .359 (14-of-39) with 20 runs, two doubles, one triple, four home runs and 11 RBI. Benak was hit-by-a-pitch for the third time on Tuesday. She is batting .583 (7-of-12) with 22 runs, three doubles and 13 SB. National Player of the Year Finalists Lauren Parker and Chrissy Owens were named two of 25 finalists for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. Parker is hitting .461 with eight home runs and 40 RBI. She ranks in the top-10 in the SEC in 10 different categories. She is batting .458 in SEC play and leads the league in two categories in conference only games. Owens is 20-2 with a 0.96 ERA and 108 strikeouts. She has nine shutouts in 21 starts. She is third in the SEC in both ERA and wins. The Crimson Tide is one of six teams with multiple selections to the list. The list will be narrowed to 10 finalists on May 9. Winning Streak The Crimson Tide is currently on a 10-game winning streak. During that span they have outscored their opponents 85-25. They scored eight or more runs in eight of the 10 games and were in double digits four times. They have hit home runs in the last six outings. The team is batting .359 (83-of-231) during the span. Earlier this season Bama won 25 straight games to start the season. RBI Machine Junior Dani Woods has been on fire during the Tide’s 10-game winning streak. She has been producing runs left and right with 16 RBI during the span. She is batting .565 (13-of-23) over the last 10 games. She has raised her average 68 points during the span. She has moved into the top-10 all-time in both doubles and RBI. For the season she has 22 runs scored, six doubles, one triple, five home runs and 34 RBI. Undefeated Senior starting pitcher Blair Potter has a distinction not many collegiate players have. She is undefeated in her Division I career with a 17-0 record at Alabama. Since transferring from Wallace-Dothan Community College, Potter has gone through the ranks without a loss. She has a career 1.70 ERA after posting a 1.37 ERA this season. In 2007 she has recorded one shutout in her 16 starts and is 12-0. She has allowed only 17 earned runs in 86.2 innings with 59 hits allowed, 15 walks and 78 strikeouts. Right-handed batters are hitting just .171 against the Tide’s first ever left-handed hurler. Powerful Program The 2007 Alabama softball team is already approaching the school record for home runs hit in a season. Tuesday night they hit two out of the park to move into a tie for second with the 2000 team with 62 home runs. With 10 games left to play in the regular season they are only 11 home runs shy of the school record of 73 set by the 1998 squad. This season in 46 games they are averaging 1.30 per contest and are on pace to set the record before the postseason. Bombs Away All nine players on the Alabama softball team who have started over 35 games have hit three or more home runs with eight of those tallying four or more. The regular starting lineup has combined for 55 home runs this season. Five of those nine players have hit six or more long balls. Mandy Burford leads the team with nine home runs while Lauren Parker, Charlotte Morgan and Kelley Montalvo all have eight. Kellie Eubanks is not far behind with six home runs. Since SEC play has started Morgan has seven home runs in the last 26 games and Montalvo has hit six. New Infield Has Bright Future At the start of the 2007 season the Tide had new starters at all four infield positions. So far they have all been pleasant surprises with 30 combined home runs and only 21 errors in 47 games. Another bright side is all three are either freshman or sophomores. Kelley Montalvo is the only returning starter moving from second to third base. She has eight home runs and six errors in 147 chances. Sophomore shortstop Kellie Eubanks has six home runs and nine errors in 146 chances. Sophomore transfer Lauren Parker has eight home runs and four errors in 140 chances. Freshman Charlotte Morgan has eight home runs and two errors in 269 chances. Stealing Records On April 3 against Northwestern State, Alabama set a school record with nine stolen bases in one game. It broke the previous record of eight set three times before. Five players combined for the nine steals. Brittany Rogers swiped three to lead the team. Jordan Praytor and Mallory Benak each tallied two while Charlotte Morgan and Mandy Burford also stole a base. The Tide are fast approaching a single season record for stolen bases. They currently are six stolen bases shy of the record of 138 established in 2000. 100 Stolen Bases and Counting The Crimson Tide have blazed their way to a SEC-leading 132 stolen bases in 47 games this season, an average of 2.8 stolen bases per game. Brittany Rogers leads the team with 36 stolen bases and has only been caught stealing five times. Jordan Praytor sits at 22 on the year while Mandy Burford has 19 stolen bases. Lauren Parker is 13-of-17 and Mallory Benak is 13-of-17. The Tide has stolen 112 more bases than their opponents and has three or more stolen bases in 24 games this year. Continued on next post |

| Re: Crimson Tide Softball Standings 30 RBI Club Only 17 SEC players have recorded 30 or more RBI this season but the Tide has five of those. Lauren Parker leads the team with 40 RBI and is one of only seven players with 40 or more on the season. Mandy Burford is ninth in the SEC with 35. Dani Woods has recorded 34 RBI on the season. Charlotte Morgan is close behind with 32. Jordan Praytor joined the list recently and now has 31 for the season. Three other players have tallied over 20 this season. Big Innings One of the big reasons that Alabama is 43-4 this season is the fact that they have scored three or more runs in an inning 46 times. They have had an inning with at least three runs in 30 of the 47 contests. They have two games this season with a 10-run inning with both coming in the second frame. They accomplished the feat against Winthrop and most recently Georgia. The 10 runs tied for the second highest run total in a single inning in school history. Alabama has also recorded nine, eight and seven-run innings this season. They have scored six runs six times, five runs seven times, four runs 12 times and three runs 16 times. They have outscored their opponents 79-10 in the second inning and 72-13 in the third. Hitting .300 or Better Seven of the nine everyday starters are batting over .300 for Alabama. As a team they are hitting .336 which is 123 points better than their opponents’ average of .213. In all 10 of the 16 players who have batted this season are hitting over .300. Lauren Parker leads the way with a .461 avg. while Mallory Benak is 7-of-12 (.583). Brittany Rogers is also batting over .400 with a .413 avg. and Charlotte Morgan is batting .382. The other players batting over .300 are Jordan Praytor (.341), Michelle Menningmann (.359) Dani Woods (.337), |
