| Re: Alabama Crimson Tide 2008 Prospects Signee Update: Farmer has will to win td.yspwidearticlebody { font-size: 13.5px; }By Matt Scalici, BamaOnLine.com Staff Writer – Rivals.com When it comes to high school football, nowhere is the competition stronger and more intense than the state of Texas. When Nick Saban hired Major Applewhite, it was clear that the Tide would become more of a presence in the Lonestar State and just a few weeks into his tenure, the new Tide assistant landed one of the state's top playmakers in St. Pius X (Houston) star Tarence Farmer. "When the lights come on and it's time to play, there's nobody better to have on your team than Tarence," said Farmer's high school head coach Robin Kirk. "He does special things at crucial moments and he always finds a way to make the big play. He's got a burning desire and a will to win. That's the kind of kid he is." The 6-foot-1, 190-pound athlete played both receiver and defensive back for St. Pius amassing over 1,000 yards and 15 touchdowns on offense and 41 tackles and 3 interceptions on defense during his senior season. "He's very talented but there's a lot of talented kids in this country," said Kirk. "What makes Tarence special is his desire to win and the fact that he's the ultimate team player. He's a special guy." Farmer was bring recruited by top programs from all over the country boasting scholarship offers from Tennessee, Nebraska and Oklahoma State. The Crimson Tide came onto the scene late in the process for Farmer but prospect of playing for a Nick Saban-coached defense was too good for Farmer to pass up. "They jumped in there a little late because of Coach Saban's hiring," Kirk said. "Coach Saban sent Coach Applewhite down here and they looked at some film on him and it didn't take long for Coach Saban to decide he wanted Tarence. The big thing they liked was his explosiveness and his quickness. He's got great hand-eye coordination. He can adjust to the ball very well and for that reason they really liked him for defense." "His experience as a receiver also makes him very good at reading and understanding routes which helps a lot in the secondary. Coach Saban isn't going to just take anybody and he loved Tarence right off the bat so that should tell you what kind of talent Coach Saban sees in him." "One of his most impressive performances was in a game we actually lost during his junior year," said Kirk. "He played both ways, which in this day and time is rare. He never came off the field. He had pulled his hamstring the week before, tweaked it pretty bad. Despite that, he went out there and played one of his best games ever and really showed amazing leadership for a junior." "Late in the first half he ran back a kickoff for a touchdown, pulled hamstring and all. He ended up having 10 catches and 3 touchdowns on offense and played great on defense as well. We weren't sure if we were even going to play him but he said, 'Coach, you've got to let me help my team.' We lost by a point but I don't think we would have even been in the game if it weren't for him." Academically, Farmer had a little work to do this semester but is now expected to be a full qualifier for the fall. "He's in good standing, academically," said Kirk. "He had to make some grades here at the end to be able to qualify but we knew he would get it done and he did." With his schoolwork handled, Farmer has moved on to the physical side working to try and get his body prepared to compete for playing time in the fall. "Tarence was on his way to his personal trainer the other day and I told him he better work hard because he'll have Coach Saban coaching him personally this fall," said Kirk. "He said, 'Coach, that's exactly what I want. That's why I wanted to go there.' "He knows it's going to be a great benefit to him to have a head coach that knows so much about his position and is maybe the best secondary coach in the world. Tarence responds well to being driven hard and I know Coach Saban will do that." Updated on Monday, May 21, 2007 5:00 pm EDT

| Re: The 2007 Crimson Tide Football Recruits Tide boasts 9 on All-Star rosters Tide boasts 9 on All-Star rosters td.yspwidearticlebody { font-size: 13.5px; }By Matt Scalici, BamaOnLine.com Staff Writer – Rivals.com When the Alabama-Mississippi All Star Classic kicks off on June 2 at Mobile's Ladd-Peebles Stadium, the Crimson Tide will be well-represented. Nine players that have signed to play at Alabama will be suiting up for the annual contest with eight of those players teaming up together to represent the state of Alabama. The Tide will be the second-most represented program in this year's game with only Mississippi State (10) boasting more signees on the two rosters combined. Included on the Alabama roster are three Tide signees out of powerhouse Hoover High School. Defensive tackles Josh Chapman and Kerry Murphy, each of whom are expected to contend for playing time this fall for the Tide, will be battling in the trenches for their home state while their teammate and Tide greyshirt signee Patrick Crump will handle starting duties on the offensive line. Athens High defensive tackle Alfred McCullough will join Murphy and Chapman on the defensive front for the Alabama squad, bringing his state championship experience to what is sure to be a powerful defensive line. At defensive end, Tide signee Chavis Williams out of Dora was selected to the All-Star game after a freakish 13 sack, 100 tackle senior season. As if the Alabama squad's defensive front wasn't scary enough, the linebacker corps will feature Decatur star Rolando McClain, rated by Rivals.com as the state's top player in the 2007 class. The Tide signee will show his skills at middle linebacker before joining the Tide later this summer to compete for playing time. On the offensive side of the ball, two of the biggest playmakers of the Tide's 2007 signing class will be suiting up for the Alabama team at wide out. UMS-Wright's Brandon Gibson grabbed 52 catches for nearly 800 yards his senior year and was rated the state's top wide receiver prospect. Tarrant's Marquis Maze, a 5-foot-8, 160-pound athlete, went for 1,200 total yards and 15 touchdowns his senior season despite playing in just 6 games. Maze will bring his unmatched agility and athleticism to the field for the Alabama squad before joining the Tide this fall. The Alabama team will be coached by Prattville High School head coach Bill Clark, who coached current Tide players Travis McCall and Bobby Greenwood as well as recent Tide signee Nick Gentry. While the Alabama team will be riddled with future UA players, one future member of the Tide will be suiting up for the Mississippi squad. South Panola fullback Jeramie Griffin, rated the No. 4 fullback prospect in the nation by Rivals.com, will bring his superb blocking and power running to the All-Star game to represent the Magnolia State. Griffin, who switched his commitment to the Tide after originally committing to Ole Miss, totaled more than 1,200 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. The Alabama squad has won seven of the last eight All-Star games holding a 13-6 edge all time in the annual contest. The game will kickoff at 7 p.m. CT. and will be carried by CSS on a tape-delay basis. Updated on Sunday, May 20, 2007 5:13 pm EDT |
