Pittsburg saying Bill Cowher may leave?

Bill met with the team owner and after 15 long years may be wanting to move on to another part of life. Could he be the answer to Alabama's quandry? After all the man has won a Superbowl and has had his team in the playoffs on a consistent basis. His offense is one of the best and his defences are ledgendary.

Yes, Cowher is considering retirement - he bought a house in North Carolina. And yes, Alabama has a coaching vacancy. That's where I think the story stops. Cowher's not a legitimate candidate for the Crimson Tide coaching job.

There have been rumors on the radio around Cleveland that if Romeo fails they will try and contact Cowher for the Browns job. It was a call in show, but they dedicated a lot of time to it.

Cowher cannot coach another NFL team for 1 year if he leaves the Steelers so college would be his only option next year.

He won't coach next year; at least, that's the popular believe among the Pittsburgh area media.

Re: Pittsburg saying Bill Cowher may leave?

I don't think Cowher is interested in coaching in 2007. He seems burned out.

Perhaps in 2008 or beyond he'll return to the sport.

Re: Pittsburg saying Bill Cowher may leave?

The "U" has contacted him but I tend to agree he may take a year or so off before returning to coaching.

If he waits a year, he can have his pick of just about any team he wants. He can pick a team that immediately puts him in contention again.

No, he wouldn't be able to take another NFL job for at least a year, so IF Saban goes to Bama, Cowher is not a potential replacement.

Re: Pittsburg saying Bill Cowher may leave?

Well, Pittsburgh IS looking for a coach, because, as you said, Cowher's resigned. Miami, Arizona, Oakland and Atlanta have openings right now... Coughlin's future in New York seems to depend on whether or not he can win a playoff game. Romeo Crennel is safe in Cleveland, but he has to make wholesale changes to his coaching staff. Steelers are just hoping they'll be able to promote one of their two uber-assistants, either Whisenhunt or Grimm.

Didn't Ken Whisenhutt interview with Atl yesterday?

Well, a lot of teams are interested both in Whisenhunt and Grimm... that why many of us think Cowher moved up his retirement announcement from next Monday to yesterday, so that the team could try to swoop in and keep them. Not sure it's going to work, though.
