Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

It looks like this Coach Rod leaving WVU deal is finally over.

West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez turned down Alabama on Friday, telling his players that he'll be back for his sixth season with the Mountaineers.

"I fully respect his decision and wish him the best," Alabama athletic director Mal Moore said

There were so many Rich Rodriguez rumors that I gotta believe it's not a simple story. We may never know what went on and what casued so many media outlets to jump the gun by announcing he had accepted the Alabama head coach job.

Never underestimate what it means to be from West Virginia. It is something that is in your blood. It is such a special place. Those who have never been here just don't understand. Many want to make jokes or say bad things about us, but that just seems to draw us closer together. We know that we are blessed to live here, a hidden jewel that few will ever find. Coach Rod is one of us. He would know exactly what I am talking about. I know Bama has some great fans, but West Virginia Football is life and death around here. I thought the money Alabama was throwing around might sway him, but when I read what his parents had to say, I knew he would stay. They were asked if they would be moving to Alabama if he took the job. They said no, they would not be moving down there. They were West Virginians and would stay West Virginians. It looks like Coach Rod feels the same way.

Cool Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

Being from W.Virginia,
Hay brother I know what you mean, Us New Jerseyians feel the same way, We take alot of ribbing but were a tough group. Alabama forgetabodit!
I'm relly happy YOUR coach stayed! I woul'd have lost all respect for coach Rod if he left. Its the same as a man who leaves his faithful wife, for a pretty woman. NO CHARACTER!!! Coach Rod showed he's a man of character. again congratulations! The big East is a special place (The Acc and to a leser extent the sec continue to show that they don't understand what the word character means) Shiano, Rodriguez, Patrino, leavitt. all men of charactor, God bless them.
Mike

Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

and its just the same to be from Alabama... I believe that Rich Rodriguez just wasn't the right guy.. If he would have come to Alabama to be head coach it would have been great, but he didn't so maybe there is someone else out there that better suits us.. I guess we'll have to see.. I have to respect his decision even though...

Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

At the rate we are going, we'll be lucky to get ANY coach that has a clue what football is as long as Mal and company are at the helm!!!

I think Rod would have been good, but can't say that I blame him for staying at WV given our wonderful track record with coaches!

If Rodriguez is not the right guy, then who is? The options are starting to get very thin.

Unhappy Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

Hi, this is my first post. I am so sad about the RR rejection of the job. Not for the reason that he won't be our coach, but maybe because what everyone on Atlanta sports talk radio has been saying since Shula was fired are right. Am I really as delusional as I am beginning to believe? When we fired Shula and all the radio people said the Alabama job is one of worst in the country I didn't believe it. In fact I called one of them and told them they were crazy! I mean we are talking about THE COACH FOR THE CRIMSON TIDE! Who would't want that job.!?! But look at us now. The coach of a Big East school turned us down. It seems the world is rotating backwards. I just can't bear to see my beloved Tide sink so low (pardon the pun). What's next a high school who turns us down. This is really heart breaking. I am one sad Bama fan1

Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

No deal is ever really done. Let this be a good lesson to all that you get what you negotiate in life. Rich was smart to talk with Alabama and get an offer in hand. With an offer in hand this gave him immediate power to re-negotiate a better contract at West Virginia. WVU came under some great pressure from the thought that Rich could possibly be leaving. This is no different in the normal everyday job market. People do this type of thing every day, but you best be sure you have secured a better offer and you bring great value to the organization before you hint that you might be leaving to take another job. It once worked for me. I did not want to leave my job, but I had another company offering some incentives I could not ignore. I got the offer letter in hand and then went to talk to my boss that I was considering a move with an offer in hand. It netted an increase in salary very quickly that normally would have taken 10 years to reach. However, if you try to pull this trick more than once, you might find yourself actually taking the other offer to call your bluff. It is a risk, but the rewards can be great. Risk management... Risk takers know the rewards can be big.

Now the burden is on Rich to perform at the next level. Fans can be fickle as we know in Alabama, but they are no different in WV either.

Whew! Now I can keep my Gator Bowl tickets on the 50-yd line.

Is the Big East really just a step above high school...please show some respect...I believe we had an excellent showing in the top fifteen all season.

Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

its rather simple. If your a great coach at alabama you will be compared to bear bryant, at wvu who do you get compared to its eaiser to build a legacy there. i belive its a similar reason why schiano is staying at rutgers. The big east has some of the best coches right now now lets see if they can recruit. Petrino,RR,Dave Weinstdadt, Bobby Petreno, and i foreget the coach of south florida but he is doing a solid job down there. people need to stop remembering what people said about the bigeast 18 months ago. Lousiville and WVU are top teams in the country and the rest are coming along nicely. Why would people want to coach at alabama a coach goes 10-2 and then 6-6 and is fired without a question. I dont know much about mal morre but the way you guys talk about him seems like you guys got an isiah thomas on your hand.

Thumbs down Screw Mal Moore...

I give credit to Rodriguez for sticking to his players. But compared to 'Bama, WV has no football tradition. Unless you live in this state, you have no idea of what college ball means down here. I've lived in WV and I liked it, but the football culture is nothing compared to intensity in the SEC, from top to bottom.

Someone needs to take Mal Moore behind the wood shed and whip is as$, and good. He and a few boosters who are stuck in the 70's and continue to screw up a program. If Shula had had an offensive coordinator (his one big mistake was calling plays himself) he might still be there. Joe Keins is one of the best in the business on D...it they even thought of getting rid of him, then they should riot on Alabama's campus and string Mal Moore up by his nuts.

I disagree with alot of people on here...someone will jump on the Alabama head coach position. If you succeed, you'll win SEC titles and be in the NC hunt on a regular basis. That challenge appeals to alot of coaches...if they can bitc# slap Mal Moore and keep him in place, the Tide will be back on top of the SEC in 2-3 years.

That's a fact...there's too much a storied history at 'Bama to ignore the job. When they get the right coaching staff, the winning seasons and SEC title shots, etc. will come back.
