Honestly I did not mean it as a lack of respect for the Big East. My point is that Alabama has fallen and we are not the power house we used to be. The problem is that I am just now coming to terms with it. Can you honestly say that maybe 10 years ago a Big East coach would have turned down a chance to coach at Alabama? The world of college football has changed and I guess it has just taken a while for me to catch up. I am happy that you guys got to keep your coach. We felt that sting when Coach Fran left. So good luck in your bowl game.

Cool Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

With all due respect, I think Bill Curry would be brutal. Look at his job at KY. He completely lacks the charisma and doesn't have "it" to be a head coach; no way.

Stoops isn't going to leave OU for 'Bama; forget about that dream. He's the best, in my opinion.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mike Riley at Oregon State isn't now thrown into the mix. He's solid.

I saw someone previously mention Jimmy Johnson, which I never considered. I have to say I think that would be genius, and maybe he's tired of being a TV commentator. He's obviously extremely competitive, and that's what it takes to succeed. Plus, he's a good ol' boy, and no matter what anyone thinks, that is big in the South.

first off whoa great screen name. second do you really think jimmy johnson is willing to leave tv to put himself in that situation where if he doesnt win he is gone.

I talked earlier about george o'leary, at one point he was good enough for nd is it worth taking a shot? Espicallly since noone seems to want the job

Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

Well said. There were a few moments Thursday night when I fell victim to what many in Alabama did --- believing the hype. Rodriguez never really wanted to go. If it took the threat of leaving to get the big money guys with WV ties (yes there are a few....) to pony up, then so be it. Alabama did nothing wrong, other than underestimate the value of home. This job isn't what it was 25 years ago. Bear Bryant was one of the best ever, but that was a different time, with different rules and a different way of doing things. The UA job, just like the Miami job isn't what it used to be.

I wish UA all the best in finding a new coach. I'm just glad we don't have to do the same thing.......

Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

Coach Rod was just afarid to come to Alabama. If you are afraid just say so. I really do not blame him for not taking the Bama job. Mal is pitiful and the expectations at Alabama are not for the weak of heart. I do not believe his wife could take the nasty media in Alabama, esp Paul Finebum--

I think O'Leary is a great coach, but with all the scandals that have occured at Bama and his resume dishonesty, I think Bama really can't take that route. It was the scandals that have brought so many troubles, I don't think we can risk another. But a really great coach who really didn't need to do what he did to get the job at ND in the first place.

I think O'Leary is a great coach, but with all our scandals and his dishonesty on his resume, I don't think we can take a chance with him. He didn't need to to lie on his resume to get the job,not real sure why he did it. I think he is a great coach who had a serious laspe of judgement and I think we have to stay away from that. We have to keep it clean at all costs.

Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

I have to say im disappointed he didnt come to Alabama but he is a smart man to use the job to get the facilities he wanted cause I think that was his intentions this whole time. oh well maybe we can go after Mike Leech from Texas Tech now.

Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

Why does everyone think coaching for bama would be so special? Coach Bryant and Stallings created their own legacies, not unlike what Coach Rod is trying to accomplish at WV. Once you have established your program as a perennial winner will you begin to get more consideration from recruits and commitments from blue chip prospects. This recent tactic used by Coach Rod not only gave him leverage to improve the facilities and recieve monetary gains, but also helped with recruitment. As you may know alot of WV players are from the south including current QB Pat White. With all the recent turmoil with the Bamas head coaching job what player would want to commit to a school that cannot seem to keep a head coach. It suprises me how people believe the Big East conference is weak. Yes it did hurt losing a few schools to the ACC, but we have recovered well. Oh, and lets not forget what WV did to Georgia last year. I am no way bashing Bama football and have always been a fan of the Tide but it's not the only program rich in tradition and passionate fans.

Cool Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

When I heard that Rodriguez's wife cried at the possiblity of going to 'Bama, I knew that that puss@-whipped Rodriguez was not the man for the job. Jimmy Johnson or some other "good 'ole Southern Boy" needs to fill the job or else they will fail too. It's too bad that Mal Moore can't get canned (he has too many knee pads for that) or Spurrier may have come to the Tide.

Forget Gene Stallings...he's a great coach but his age and personal life mean too much for him. USF's coach or Houston Nut are great choices, but I don't think it will happen.

If push comes to shove, let Joe Keins take the job. He can find a great offensive coordinator, still manage the D, and the Tide will be back on track. One thing is for sure...as long as Mal Moore is still drawing breath and sucking...uh, air, the Tide's football program will suffer.

Kudos to Rodriguez for sticking to his guns...seriously.

Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

Mervin, thanks for the compliment. I'm not saying I heard any rumor about Jimmie Johnson. I'm just saying that once I heard someone here float his name, it all made sense to me. He's done the cushy TV stuff for awhile, and that's fine. Maybe that's all he wants to do. I'm just saying that he seemed like such an ultracompetitive person that TV might get boring, and maybe his ego would tell him that he can rebuild what nobody else has been able to do. Heck, I always hated Miami U. and the Cowboys, but the results speak for themselves.

I think Jon Gruden falls in the same category, although with a different scenario. He may be tired of the ragging in Tampa. Maybe college would be "refreshing" for him.

I think Gene Stallings is a tremendous human being, but that it is too late for him to come back. In my opinion, Leary is too "tainted." However, Dennis Erickson just got hired at ASU; he "rehabilitated" himself.

A guy who desperately wants a job is Gary Barnett; a huge mistake in my opinion. He'd have initial success, then it would fade. My gosh, let's pray Rick Neuhisel isn't an option! Probably still tainted from his gambling issue.

I will STILL say Mike Riley at OSU would be good; maybe its just 'cause I like the Beavers.

Here's a name: Venables, the defensive coordinator at OU. He WILL be a head coach, and soon.

Whoa Nelly, do you think you need to fire Mal Moore to get a coach or do you think he can get it done.

Second Which coach at this point would you want to coach bama?

Re: Coach Rodriguez Turned Down Alabama

Hey guys!

I was the one who suggested going after Jimmy Johnson he is the "PERFECT FIT" for Alabama. He has the guts and loves the glory he could achieve once again. My alternate pick has been John Gruden now he's at 3-10 with no hope of the playoffs. If you don't think there is pressure in the owner's office think again. Alabama is getting a second opportunity to get another outstanding coach who understands that you must MUST WIN! The fans have the right to expect Alabama to play for the SEC title and a shot at the BCS.
