Alabama Offers WVU's Rich Rodriguez

Alabama offered its football coaching job to West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez Thursday, according to several newspaper reports.

Alabama has not confirmed or denied.

We already know that Rodriguez met Tuesday with Mal Moore in NY. He then met with WVU athletic director Ed Pastilong the next day. WVU plans to spend millions of dollars to upgrade its football facilities. "We want him to stay," Pastilong told The Associated Press on Wednesday evening.

Rodriguez built West Virginia into a Big East Conference power, winning the Sugar Bowl after the 2005 season and a share of three straight league titles. The Mountaineers finished 10-2 this season and play in the Gator Bowl against Georgia Tech on Jan. 1.

Rodriguez grew up 30 minutes from West Virginia's campus and played for the Mountaineers in the 1980s.

Rodriguez would bring an impressive offensive track record to a Tide program that was criticized at times under Shula for being unimaginative and too conservative.

Re: Alabama Offers WVU's Rich Rodriguez

It has been great the last few years to be a Mountaineer. With great coaches like Beilein and Coach Rod the sky is the limit at WVU. The only problem with outstanding coaches is the raid from other schools for their services. I truly think it would be in Coach Rod's best interest to stay at WVU. He has two All-American skill players coming back next year with the toughest games at home. We could be leaving a BCS Championship Game behind. Not only would he be leaving great potential behind but he would also be losing job security. Is there really any difference between 1 or 3 million dollars besides the size of your yaught. If financial security is a reality shouldnt family stability be the most important. He could be uprooting his family for Tuscaloosa and only last there a couple years. If Alabama treats a coach who is an alum and former QB who led them to a Cotton Bowl victory last year like they did with Shula what makes Coach Rod think he will be any different. Coach Rod has about as much job security at WVU as God has over the universe. Why trade that in for 'Bama?

Why trade that in?

Because WVU is not Alabama. To coach at Bear Bryant's school? What is a bigger stage? Alabama vs Auburn or WVU vs Pitt.
C'mon. WVU is a third tier school that is fighting to become a 2nd tier school, Alabama is first tier school that has fallen to a 2nd tier school, 2Rich can bring them back.
If I were him I'd take Slaton and White with me though.

White is from alabam anyway and rod knows whats best for him and his future come to alabama and we will win another national championship the only downside to getting a new coach is we lose kines but hopefully rods offense will make up for that loss ROLL TIDE!! us students can't wait for rod to get here

Exclamation Re: Alabama Offers WVU's Rich Rodriguez

First of all, Let Rod go he didn't build that program he just ran with it when he was done a favor by being hired. He had no resume what-so-ever otheer than being a coordinator, Not even an assistant! Second, none of the players are going with him because it's all about money, and if they transfer they have to sit for a year, and all that does is delay the possibility of making professional money... NOT GONNA FLY. Thirdly, and correct me if I'm wrong, Alabama isn't even the best team in the state of Alabama, and it's not a close race... it's a landslide. The reality of it is that Alabama has not been good for more than one year at a time since the late 70s. The only way the tide is rolling is over so Auburn can smack that ass (WAR EAGLE!). The Tide have actually been less than second to many teams, so if you feel the need to compare programs (WVU & Alabama) they are both B squads. Alabama has won 12 national titles, but what have you done lately? You even lost to Mississippi State this year... I hope you get Rodriguez though, because he's not all he's cracked-up to be!

I am not sure who is in your "tiers," but WVU is not a third "tier" football program (unless the tiers consist of 3 or four teams each). While WVU has not become a perennial national championship contender, which I would imagine is tier 1, they are almost there.

Please keep underestimating the Mountaineers like UGA did last year. But remember, they keep proving all of the naysayers wrong.

You need to google "Rich Rodriguez" and "Clemson."

Re: Alabama Offers WVU's Rich Rodriguez

If coach Rod is smart he will stay at WVU and as far away from Mal Moore as possible, and this is from a TRUE bama fan!

since alabama has not been a power in "D!" football since parity was introduced, i would assume they are trying to buy a real coach as compared to recruting every good player they would have had to compete against. "Bear" had no competition. He could not have competed in any major conf.

In the past couple of years they havn't been the best team, but if you look at great rivals over the years it always happens like this. One team will win alot and the other team will not, then it changes. And you say they havn't had great back to back season since the 70's?? Where were you in the 90's when stallings was here??? That was when Auburn was a 2nd teir team. And ya 12 national titles, how many other schools can say that??

Re: Alabama Offers WVU's Rich Rodriguez

I heard a couple of mins. ago the offer to ROD was 2.1 mil per year. If he takes that and does good next year I'm sure they will bump that up a couple of hundred thousand dollars.
