Next Alabama Head Coach

With a lot of firings happening lately in the NCAA...there are a lot of options to fill the position at Alabama. Here are some of them....Jeff Tedford from Cal...Steve Spurrier...Nick Saban...Larry Coker. Really only one of those can I honestly say ABSOLUTELY NOT and that's Spurrier. I'm not saying the guy is not a great coach...I'm saying if you're going to do that...why not try and get Tubberville or Fulmer while you're at it. I say if you want to throw some fun in the mix take Coker. The guy can recruit with the best of 'em. He led Miami to 59-15 record and 1 National Championship. He knows how to coach and I think it's exactly the electricity that Bryant-Denny Stadium needs for next year

Re: Next Alabama Head Coach

Coker's an interesting choice. He's a good coach, but he's awful laid back. I wonder if he'd be the right fit for Bama. What about Sylvester Croom? I believe he was a candidate back when Shula was hired, and that he has tied to the university. I'd like the see Frank Solich back coaching a big-time program too; look at how he's turned around the Ohio Bobcats.

Thumbs up Re: Next Alabama Head Coach

Other names I've seen thrown around to be the next Alabama head coach:
Rutgers coach Greg Schiano
former Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez
Tulsa coach Steve Kragthorpe
Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe
Navy coach Paul Johnson

Fulmer's at his alma mater so I don't see him leaving UT until he's kicked out or retires.

Spurrier won't go to Alabama, not enough golf courses even with the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

I just don't see Coker being the guy for the Tide. He's got a lot of baggage and a poor record once he lad to live on his own recruiting. And recruiting Alabama would be harder than recruiting Miami.

Re: Next Alabama Head Coach

We are screwed. No ifs, ands, or buts....

Who in their right mind would come to Alabama now....4 coaches in 7 years.

Sylvestor Croom is a loser. I would be an Auburn fan if he was hired.

If we could get nick saban....the might go somewhere.

We need a butt-chewing coach, Bear Bryant was a butt-chewer behind the scenes.

Shula? Too nice, Too conservative, no imagination.

Any decent options besides Saban? I'd have to think he's a pretty long shot.

Re: Next Alabama Head Coach

I would say Sylvester Croom...but I just think it's time to steer away from "bear boys." I agree that Coker is laid back...at times. But with his style of play, to me, he's probably the best choice. The coach from Navy wouldn't be too bad...but has he had a job where he actually has to recruit? I have no idea that's why I'm asking. I also agree that Spurrier would never come to Tuscaloosa nor do I think that Moore can sway Saban to come there either. Coker can recruit...plain and simple. His problem at Miami was the environment. You get kids straight out of high school and put them in a town like Miami and some are bound to turn to "thug" tactics and behavior. I was a student in Alabama and know there is nothing to do in T-town.

Re: Next Alabama Head Coach

Croom looks just as dumb on the sideline as does Shula.

Since we have lost Shula and it's eminent, we need a rant and raving coach.

IMHO, I think we should have grabbed Lou Holtz when he got canned from Notre Dame for coming close to Ara's records.

Lou went to a know-nothing SC. He would have done a lot better at Alabama, combine his name and history with Alabama's....

Bowden is washed up, he was only good because players only went to Florida schools because of the Florida climate.

Any body that is good, we are going to pay dearly for....will the program suffer because of this diversion of funds?

I just don't think idiot Mal Moore is looking at the whole picture.....

Re: Next Alabama Head Coach

If taking a seasoned head coach doesn't happen....then here's what needs to. 1) can Mal Moore. The problem starts here. He tells the coaches this is how it is and that's that. There are no compromises or anything. 2) get a coach and groom him from scratch. Hire somebody that is an assistant somewhere else. Either that or somebody willing to adapt to Alabama. Not somebody that wants Alabama to adapt to him.

Re: Next Alabama Head Coach

Couple interesting comments on this blog.
Quote:
The Finalists:
1. South Carolina's Steve Spurrier
2. Louisville's Bobby Petrino
3. Vanderbilt's Johnson

Johnson, who's done amazing things with the Commodores, is the man if neither Spurrier or Petrino take the bait. Our illustrious insider also said there won't be a decision until Thursday. Most people, though, expect an announcement by late today.
Vandy's Johnson is kind of interesting. He's been able to get some wins at Vandy. That *IS* an accomplishment.

But an annoucement on a new head coach today? No freaking way.

I wouldn't want any of them. If I had to choose one, it would be Petrino

Re: Next Alabama Head Coach

Petrino or Johnson would be good choices; what about the OTHER Johnson, Navy's coach? Or Bobby Ross, maybe? Just throwing some names out there, but Ross, like Frank Solich (who I mentioned earlier) and George O'Leary are some bigger names looking to get back with a major program. Hey, how about Norm Chow?

Re: Next Alabama Head Coach

Paul Johnson needs to stay in Navy. He has no proven record of recruiting or defeating big name teams. Look at Navy's schedule. Besides Notre Dame, they have possibly the weakest schedule in D-1. Frank Solich would be a great addition as would Norm Chou. Norm would take some money and convincing though.

Re: Next Alabama Head Coach

It is very possible that Alabama may have a new head coach by the end of the day. Reports from 690 AM Birmingham say Spurrier just might be announced at 2 or 230 today.

Lord I hope this is just a rumor

Re: Next Alabama Head Coach

Spurrier has been waiting on this job....Spurrier will be the next Bama coach IMO...

I'm not a SS fan. Too much of a gun slinger for my liking. I remember too vividly this year So. Carolina vs. Florida ....Fourth and 1yd. for SC ...game on the line...Steve calls for a pass thrown to the endzone. Incomplete...game over.

Bama fans will string him up for one of those moves!
