TUSCALOOSA - So is it good to have a bye the week before a big game so coaches and players have an extra week to prepare, or is it better to have a bye the week after a big game, so players have a week to recuperate?
Neither. It's best to have a bye halfway through a season.
"I don't think it has as much to do with the game as it does the timing of the season," Alabama coach Nick Saban said.
Second-ranked Alabama's bye comes two-thirds of the way through its regular season. That's why the Crimson Tide (8-0, 5-0 in the Southeastern Conference) seemed to be running on empty in the fourth quarter of a 12-10 victory Saturday over Tennessee.
"We were running on fumes in our last game," Saban said. "You try to manage it as a coach. That's my fault; that's my responsibility. I think our team was tired in our last game.
