| Intense internal competition has made the Tide unbeatable TUSCALOOSA - Six regular-season games down. Six to go. So it's midseason for the Alabama football team? Not quite. When you expect to play 14 games, the halfway point would be next week, following a 6:45 p.m. homecoming game Saturday against No. 22 South Carolina (5-1, 2-1 in the Southeastern Conference). But now that the Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0) is halfway to its second consecutive perfect regular season, and now that it has risen to No. 2 in The Associated Press poll, it's a perfect time to make a point. There's only one team that can beat Alabama before its destined rematch against No. 1 Florida in the SEC championship game. That would be Alabama. And the Crimson Tide isn't likely to beat itself on any given Saturday. That's because it beats itself regularly on any given Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Practice is where Alabama players routinely face their stiffest competition each week. Alabama fans, whose passion is matched by their knowledge, understand this. How else do you explain 84,050 to 92,138 seats filled for an A-Day scrimmage the past three springs? But it's more than offense vs. defense, crimson vs. white, best vs. best. It's running back vs. running back. It's linebacker vs. linebacker. It's players fighting for starting positions and playing time. Story
